Treatment Questions

How long will each treatment take?

Depending on whether you are seeing our chiropractors, physical therapists, or both, this amount of time will vary. For a chiropractic care visit, it is common to be in and out of the office in 30 minutes or less. If you see our physical therapy team, plan on 45-60 minutes. If you see both, it will likely be closer to 60 minutes. We strive to run on time and get you to your next appointment because we know your time is valuable.

I have had back pain for years, what does Performance Plus do to help this?

We treat chronic back pain and we are highly effective at relieving both pain and motion restrictions. Just because you have had an issue for a long time does not mean that you can’t improve it. Our doctors use our unique combination of chiropractic care and physical therapy treatments, which will help you return to pain-free living in no time!

How long does it take to recover from an injury?

The natural inflammatory process takes at least 14 days to cease. Most injuries require 4-6 weeks to recover and can take up to a year total for complete remodeling (we expect most recovery happens in the first 3 months after an injury occurs, think 80%-90% better in that time-frame).

Why does it hurt more to sit than stand?

With many patients, their primary issue is not having pain with movement, it’s when they aren’t moving that they hurt. The main reason for this is that the body requires movement to “feed” its issues. For instance, the disc material in the back is like a sponge and frequently needs to be compressed and then “relaxed” to get the proper nutrition for healing.

Why do I become more“stiff”as I age?

All synovial joints require water to remain flexible. As we age, we slowly lose fluid (desiccation) in each of those joints, which then leads to joint stiffness. We start to dry out and require more movement to “loosen” the joints.

What is the age range you work with?

Our physical therapists and chiropractors work with all ages from birth to senior citizens. If you have a specific need, feel free to call us at 816-232-5113.

Why do I need to schedule appointments so frequently?

The body requires frequent activity to improve. The standard physiological response requires working a body part at least 3 times per week for improvement. This principle carries over to chiropractic care, physical therapy, and any exercise. Adjustments affect the soft tissues surrounding spinal joints, much like stretching affects muscle and ligaments in the hamstring, for instance. Just as we can’t stretch a tight hamstring once and fix it, we can’t mobilize a spinal joint once and provide maximum mobility. Like repetitive stretching, each adjustment builds on the last one.

Chiropractic Questions

How do chiropractic adjustments help?

Chiropractic adjustments help by realigning the spine, by providing mobility to fixated (stuck) joints. The increased mobility allows increased fluid in the joint space, which improves cushioning, motion and decreases inflammation. The “pop” sometimes heard with an adjustment is due to a vacuum that occurs when joints are slightly separated. It is harmless and means good, functional movement.

What injuries do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors primarily treat spinal conditions including sprain/strain, arthritis, disc issues, arm and leg numbness, headache and generalized back pain.

Physical Therapy Questions

How can physical therapy help chronic problems like arthritis?

Most chronic issues affect your ability to move and how effective those movements ultimately are. With physical therapy, we will address any motion restrictions and strength/stability deficits. Our physical therapists provide corrective exercises, stretches and mobilizations to address those issues. The stronger and more flexible you are, the less pain and stiffness you will have.

Diabetic Shoes and Braces Questions

How are our diabetic shoes different from regular shoes?

Diabetic shoes, also known as extra-depth shoes, differ from regular shoes because they are specifically designed to reduce the risk of skin breakdown in diabetics with co-existing foot health concerns such as neuropathy, poor circulation, and foot deformities.
In addition, Diabetic shoes are designed with the following:

  • - Diabetic shoes are extra deep to accommodate diabetic insoles or orthotics

  • - They also have a built-in, firm heel counter that delivers medial and lateral foot stability

  • - Wider than normal toe box

  • - Stitching is on the outside of a diabetic shoe. Stitching on the inside can cause skin irritation or breakdown

  • - The shoe collar around the ankle is padded

  • - The tongue is thick and padded to help secure the foot back in the shoe

Can I receive diabetic shoes even though I'm not a diabetic?

Yes, but they will not be covered by insurance. Cash/Check/Credit Card/Care Credit are acceptable

Do you have a certified diabetic shoe fitter?

Yes.

For diabetic shoes, do I need a referral by an MD?

Yes, and you must have an appointment with your MD for diabetic foot problems within 6 mos. of ordering shoes
